In Memoriam: Michael Bierman

June 23, 2026/in News

Michael BiermanNeighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) mourns the passing of Michael Bierman, a beloved former Board member, steadfast advocate for access to justice, and dear friend of NLSLA. Michael passed away leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to the communities we serve.

Michael joined NLSLA’s Board of Directors in 1987, at a time when the organization was far smaller than it is today. What began with a simple invitation to attend a board meeting became a commitment that would span 36 years.

Throughout nearly four decades of service, Michael provided thoughtful guidance, institutional knowledge, and unwavering support as NLSLA navigated periods of significant change and growth. He helped steward the organization through political challenges, funding uncertainties, and transformational expansion, always remaining focused on NLSLA’s mission of ensuring equal access to justice for low-income individuals and families.

Michael believed deeply in the power of legal aid to change lives. As a respected attorney whose career included leadership roles at Tuttle & Taylor, Luce Forward, McKenna Long & Aldridge, and Dentons, he understood the legal profession’s responsibility to serve those who would otherwise be denied access to representation. His commitment to pro bono service and social justice made him a natural champion for NLSLA’s work.

Over the course of his tenure, Michael witnessed NLSLA grow from a small neighborhood legal services program into one of California’s most impactful legal aid organizations, serving hundreds of thousands of individuals and families across Los Angeles County. Yet despite the organization’s growth, he consistently encouraged NLSLA to remain bold, innovative, and grounded in its mission.

Reflecting on NLSLA’s future at the conclusion of his board service, Michael shared a sentiment that perfectly captured his vision for the organization: “I hope that it [NLSLA] stays scrappy, and that the lawyers keep fighting and pushing. That they never become satisfied with the way things are.”

Those words continue to resonate today.

Michael’s wisdom, humility, and dedication left an indelible mark on NLSLA. His leadership helped shape the organization we are today, and his belief in justice and opportunity for all will continue to inspire our work for years to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to Michael’s family, his wife, Susie, his children, Adam, Rebecca and David, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are profoundly grateful for his extraordinary service and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

Michael will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
