Donate to NLSLA

Your contribution will help an NLSLA client get the housing, health care and other vital services they deserve. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable residents of Los Angeles County!

Not all heroes wear capes!

Join our monthly giving program and become a Neighborhood Hero.

Neighborhood Heroes are special, dedicated supporters who participate in our monthly giving program. The benefits of being a Neighborhood Hero include a thank you gift with your welcome packet, exclusive event invitations, and an annual progress report on how your gift is helping support vulnerable residents of Los Angeles County.

Help educate people on how to advocate for themselves when they cannot afford a lawyer. Help survivors of domestic violence file a court order to protect themselves and their loved ones from their abusers. Provide a free legal clinic where someone who is unemployed can receive assistance to access their disability benefits, or where a person can receive help to clear a criminal record so that they can finally have a fresh start.

Check the box in our Online Donations form to choose a Neighborhood Hero option, or learn about other ways to give, below.

Donor-Advised Fund Contributions to NLSLA
When you recommend a gift to NLSLA through your donor-advised fund (DAF), you are helping low-income residents of Los Angeles County gain access to justice so they can stay housed, put food on their tables, and obtain quality health care. Designating a contribution from your DAF will help us continue our work for generations to come.

You can recommend a gift to NLSLA through your donor advised fund using the DAF Direct link located at the bottom of this page. Simply enter the amount and click “next” to complete your recommendation. Alternatively, you can contact the host of your DAF directly to recommend a grant.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Guidelines Relating to Donor-Advised Funds
The donor will not receive an income tax charitable deduction when a grant is made to NLSLA from a donor-advised fund, since the tax benefit was already received when donating to the DAF.

A grant from a DAF cannot be used to fulfill a legally enforceable pledge or result in the donor or any related party receiving more than an incidental benefit. Raffle tickets, tickets to special events, auction items, and benefits conferred in connection with the DAF grant are not permitted.

A donor may still support an organization through a DAF gift if the donor declines all benefits that would have otherwise been provided as a result of the gift. For more information about IRS guidelines, please see the IRS Donor-Advised Funds Guide Sheet Explanation. To inquire about your personal legal or tax situation, please consult your own professional advisor.

Please be sure to let NLSLA know of your intent to transfer stocks prior to initiating the trade by emailing Lynne Hiortdahl, CFO at .

Check with your tax advisor to confirm legal benefits.

Many companies match employee gifts to charities. This means your gift can have double or triple the impact.

Please contact your employer’s human resources department and request matching gift information and instructions, or search to determine if your employer has a matching gift program.

If your employer matches gifts, please complete their online form and mail it or email it to:

Cy Pres awards play a significant role in funding NLSLA’s operations and help provide free legal services to vulnerable residents of Los Angeles County. We are grateful to the attorneys and law firms who allot NLSLA as a potential recipient of residual funds in the class action lawsuits in which they are involved.

If you, your firm, or someone you know is a party to or counsel on a class action case involving Cy Pres awards, you can nominate NLSLA as an awardee. Awards can be designated to benefit general operations or a program area.
