NLSLA staff members are dedicated, passionate advocates for justice, committed to lifting up the most vulnerable residents of Los Angeles. The NLSLA family is comprised of lawyers, paralegals, and other nonprofit professionals who come to work each day eager to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.
Our unique blend of direct representation, policy advocacy, and impact litigation gives attorneys in all of our practice areas the opportunity to work towards systemic change. Through individual casework, our attorneys identify widespread issues negatively impacting low-income communities and address them through high-impact lawsuits and policy advocacy at the local, state, and national level.
At NLSLA, we develop our programs according to the most pressing needs of the communities we serve, and our work includes special, award-winning projects designed to meet those changing needs. Programs like our Medical-Legal Community Partnerships—which place lawyers in clinics and hospitals to address legal issues standing in the way of health—have been recognized for their innovative approach to legal aid. Our Shriver Housing Project, which brings together lawyers from several legal nonprofits to provide representation to people facing eviction in Los Angeles’ poorest neighborhoods, has become a national model.
The diversity of our staff mirrors the diversity of the communities we serve. More than two thirds of our staff members are women and more than 70% are people of color. We offer services in the 12 threshold languages of Los Angeles County, and our programs are designed to meet the distinct needs of Los Angeles County’s unique communities.
We are committed to creating new experiences and opportunities for employees to grow and acquire new skills. Our advocates are encouraged to participate in impact litigation that will change laws and policies to positively impact the communities we serve.
We also offer competitive benefits, which include Medical, Chiropractic, Vision, Dental, Basis life/AD&D Insurance, Long-term Disability Insurance, Voluntary Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) 125 plan, 403 (b) plan with a minimum 3% contribution, Holidays, Vacation, Sick leave, Bereavement, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), E-Central Credit Union, Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), Bilingual Supplement, Sabbatical leave, and a floating Holiday option.
