Beyond Crisis: NLSLA Stands with Survivors of Domestic Violence
Leaving an abusive relationship is only the beginning. For many survivors, legal assistance and social services are essential elements in building safety, stability, and a path forward for themselves and their family.
When Ramona* came to NLSLA, she was determined to build a better, safer life for herself and her two children, ages 12 and 17. Escaping her husband’s severe abuse meant facing a world of uncertainty and the challenge of starting over. She and her children were referred to NLSLA’s Medical-Legal Community Partnership (MLCP) by staff at the Olive View Trauma Recovery Center, and our team was ready to support them in creating a future of security and opportunity.
Together, NLSLA partnered with Ramona to develop a safety plan, giving her a framework for protecting her family and supporting their long-term well-being. From there, with NLSLA’s support, Ramona filed for divorce, finalized the process, and transferred the title to her home into her name. With her divorce finalized and her home secured, Ramona was able to take crucial steps in ensuring safety for herself and her children.
NLSLA also helped Ramona pursue immigration relief by filing a petition for a U visa, which protects noncitizen survivors of crimes such as domestic violence. The petition created a pathway toward lawful immigration status, employment authorization, and greater independence for Ramona and her family.
Public benefits offered Ramona further ways to build financial stability for her family, but she believed she was ineligible for CalWORKs and CalFresh benefits. An NLSLA attorney advocated on her behalf with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, resulting in an increase in benefits that strengthened her family’s financial foundation.
Ramona also worked with an NLSLA social worker to process the trauma she and her children had experienced. With this support—along with other services and legal assistance provided by NLSLA—Ramona was able to have the support needed to keep moving forward. It’s a reminder that healing and legal advocacy often go hand in hand.
Today, Ramona has left an abusive marriage, protected her home, accessed public benefits for the well-being of herself and her children, and taken vital steps on her journey toward building a safer life. Her story reflects what’s possible when survivors have a trusted partner to help them navigate the road ahead.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), we’re sharing Ramona’s story to highlight the critical role of free legal services in helping survivors move beyond crisis.
