NLSLA Issues Warning to Los Angeles Immigrant Communities: Immigration Legal Aid Scams Targeting Individuals & Families
LOS ANGELES, CA — As uncertainty around immigration policies continues to grow, Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) is warning immigrant communities about a fraud scam. Scammers, impersonating NLSLA and our attorneys, have reached out to vulnerable individuals claiming to offer legal assistance regarding immigration issues. In at least one instance in the Antelope Valley, an NLSLA attorney was impersonated. The scammer used the attorney’s well-respected reputation in the community to gain the trust of the victim.
“Whenever there is uncertainty in our immigrant communities, there is the potential for fraud,” said Yvonne Mariajimenez, President and CEO of NLSLA. “We encourage our immigrant neighbors to remain vigilant. NLSLA will never contact you without you contacting us first. There is legal aid help for immigrants available, just please verify directly with the organization offering assistance.”
People can protect themselves by never giving money or personal information over the phone or via text to someone you do not know. If you receive a suspicious call, voicemail, or email, do not respond directly. Instead, contact an organization through a trusted phone number or email address found on official sources, such as the organization’s website.
If you receive a call or email you believe is fraudulent, please let NLSLA know by calling 800-433-6251. Additionally, anyone looking for immigration legal assistance should contact NLSLA, and we will direct you to assistance.
