Through a combination of individual representation, high impact litigation and public policy advocacy, NLSLA combats the immediate and long-lasting effects of poverty and expands access to health, opportunity, and justice in Los Angeles’ diverse neighborhoods.
NLSLA works to preserve affordable housing and rent control, prevent unlawful evictions and foreclosures, and fight discrimination in Section 8 and other government-subsidized housing. Our attorneys provide a range of services, from advice and counsel to individual representation and high-impact litigation.
Low-income communities are always the hardest-hit when disaster strikes – whether it’s a devastating wildfire or a global health emergency. NLSLA provides disaster-related legal services that address problems with FEMA, unemployment and other critical benefits, medical insurance, and housing issues.
NLSLA works to widen access to healthcare and offers assistance to people struggling to get coverage and resolve problems with health plans. The organization also partners with doctors in community clinics and hospitals to identify and address legal issues impacting individual and community health.
NLSLA operates Self-Help Legal Access Centers in courthouses across Los Angeles County, where litigants requiring protection from domestic violence, resolving child custody disputes, seeking a divorce and halting an eviction can access legal guidance and referrals to legal services.
NLSLA provides free legal assistance to nearly 160,000 individuals and families throughout Los Angeles County every year. Our advocates specialize in areas of the law that disproportionately impact people living in poverty, including affordable housing and eviction defense, access to public benefits, support for domestic violence survivors and their children, access to healthcare, and worker and consumer rights, as well as employment and training.
