Rachel Steinback
Legal Director
Rachel Steinback, NLSLA’s Legal Director, has spent her career working to create a more just, tolerant, and equitable society. First as a policy advisor for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (ret.), and for over a decade as a civil rights litigator, Rachel has uplifted the voices of the marginalized and disenfranchised and has fought tirelessly to combat injustice. She joined NLSLA in 2020 as the Director of Litigation and Policy and became Legal Director in January 2024.
Prior to joining NLSLA, Rachel was a civil rights attorney and criminal and juvenile defense attorney in private practice. She also clerked for then-U.S. District Court Judge Amy J. St. Eve. She began her legal career at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in New York City. Rachel is admitted to practice in California, Illinois, and New York. She obtained her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
