City of LA Secures the Right to Counsel

In a major victory for housing justice, Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) played a central role in securing the City of Los Angeles’ adoption of the “Right to Counsel” for tenants facing eviction, joining unincorporated areas of LA County in guaranteeing that more low-income renters have access to legal representation when it matters most.

This milestone follows years of advocacy by NLSLA, alongside community organizations and legal aid partners. As evictions continue to drive homelessness across our region, this right is more than symbolic – it’s a lifeline.

“This is essentially a homelessness prevention program,” said NLSLA Pro Bono Director Skip Koenig. “By helping people stay housed, we are protecting lives, families, and communities.”

NLSLA is proud to have played a leading role to advance this policy and continues to advocate for expanding the Right to Counsel throughout Los Angeles County.
