Disaster Assistance Project

We provide free, legal help for individuals and families harmed by natural disasters including fires, earthquakes and floods.  NLSLA has been helping people recover from natural disasters since the Northridge Earthquake. This includes help with disaster related issues like filing of claims with FEMA, housing, benefits, and other issues.

  • Disaster Recovery Centers

In-person services are available from many state and local departments and non-profits.

The centers remain open even though FEMA application deadlines have passed.

  • FEMA Updates

The Federal Government approved a Major Disaster Declaration on January 7th, so individual assistance flows to eligible survivors. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) applications were due on March 31, 2025. You may apply within 60 days of the deadline if you have good cause for delay.

Appeals may be filed within 60 days of receiving a denial.

  • Employment (EDD)

EDD has waived the one-week waiting period to apply for benefits.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) may also be available for workers and self-employed people who do not qualify for regular unemployment benefits. The deadline to apply has been extended to June 10, 2025.

  • Small Business & Worker Relief Funds

The application deadline has been extended to May 31, 2025. You may apply within 60 days of that deadline if you have good cause for delay.
