SUMMARY:Legal Aid and AAPI Hate: Partnering with community groups to address systemic discrimination
DESCRIPTION:In the last year\, as the pandemic inflicted pain across the globe\, American officials stoked the flames of hatred by repeatedly using racial epithets in referring to the virus\, and focusing on its geographic origins to deflect from national failures to protect the American people. Predictably\, these actions have unleashed a torrent of hate aimed at people of Asian descent\, and hate crimes against Asian Americans have soared. \nAccording to Stop AAPI Hate\, an organization tracking hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders\, there were 6\,603 hate incidents reported to the center from March 19\, 2020 to March 31\, 2021. \nHate\, bias\, and discrimination aimed at the AAPI community is not a new phenomenon. But recent bursts of violence—including a horrific shooting rampage in Atlanta—have brought these long-simmering issues to the surface. They have also left legal aid organizations serving AAPI communities wondering how internal biases have shaped their outreach to AAPI clients\, and whether they might have a bigger role to play in addressing them. \nJoin Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County in welcoming a panel of experts who will discuss how legal aid organizations might diversify and improve outreach and services to AAPI communities—encompassing different nationalities\, religions\, and ethnicities spread across the socioeconomic spectrum—and how they might partner with community groups serving AAPI populations to better address systemic discrimination. \nRegister here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_T7EXCjMOSDW1WwIoQkxj7A  \n\n                              \nTiffany W. Tai                                                  Manjusha P. Kulkarni\n  \n                              \nDenny Chan                                                    Patima Komolamit\n  \n

SUMMARY:Clean Slate Traffic Ticket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:During this clinic\, individuals are assigned to meet with advocates that will help individuals address their traffic matter. Services may include referral to the City Attorney’s HEART program\, which helps alleviate traffic ticket debt for eligible individuals who are unhoused or at risk of becoming unhoused\, assistance with “Ability to Pay” petitions\, which are requests to the traffic court to consider a person’s financial circumstances when ordering fines and fees\, and advice on or assistance with reinstatement of suspended driver’s licenses. \nPlease note that reinstatement of suspended licenses is not always legally possible\, depending on the reasons leading to suspension. Advocates will assess each case on an individual basis and provide assistance accordingly. \nThis workshop is virtual and appointment-based only\, and only serves residents of the Antelope Valley (Lancaster\, Palmdale\, and surrounding areas). If you live in the Antelope Valley\, you can request a referral to the NLSLA traffic ticket workshop through the Antelope Valley DOORS program. Non-Antelope Valley residents can request assistance from Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles or the Los Angeles City Attorney’s HEART program. \nPlease note that this workshop covers Vehicle Code infractions that are filed with the traffic court. It does not cover misdemeanor or felony Vehicle Code offenses (please see information on our monthly expungement clinic if you need help addressing a misdemeanor or felony offense involving driving). Please note that our traffic ticket workshop has a waitlist\, and it could take several months to receive an appointment. While you wait for your appointment\, we recommend that you obtain a copy of your driving record by visiting the DMV in person or request your record online.
