SUMMARY:Legal Aid and AAPI Hate: Partnering with community groups to address systemic discrimination
DESCRIPTION:In the last year\, as the pandemic inflicted pain across the globe\, American officials stoked the flames of hatred by repeatedly using racial epithets in referring to the virus\, and focusing on its geographic origins to deflect from national failures to protect the American people. Predictably\, these actions have unleashed a torrent of hate aimed at people of Asian descent\, and hate crimes against Asian Americans have soared. \nAccording to Stop AAPI Hate\, an organization tracking hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders\, there were 6\,603 hate incidents reported to the center from March 19\, 2020 to March 31\, 2021. \nHate\, bias\, and discrimination aimed at the AAPI community is not a new phenomenon. But recent bursts of violence—including a horrific shooting rampage in Atlanta—have brought these long-simmering issues to the surface. They have also left legal aid organizations serving AAPI communities wondering how internal biases have shaped their outreach to AAPI clients\, and whether they might have a bigger role to play in addressing them. \nJoin Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County in welcoming a panel of experts who will discuss how legal aid organizations might diversify and improve outreach and services to AAPI communities—encompassing different nationalities\, religions\, and ethnicities spread across the socioeconomic spectrum—and how they might partner with community groups serving AAPI populations to better address systemic discrimination. \nRegister here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_T7EXCjMOSDW1WwIoQkxj7A  \n\n                              \nTiffany W. Tai                                                  Manjusha P. Kulkarni\n  \n                              \nDenny Chan                                                    Patima Komolamit\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Elephant in the Room: The Evolving Role of Legal Aid in Addressing Systemic Racism
DESCRIPTION:In fighting to expand access to health\, housing\, economic opportunity\, and justice for low-income communities\, legal aid organizations have engaged in racial justice work since their inception in 1965. But most federally-funded legal aid groups have done this work by default; racial justice is not the stated goal\, but often the outcome of working to address the structural inequalities that lead to poverty. \nYet tackling inequality by focusing on poverty is not the same as setting out to dismantle systemic racism. And as the nation begins a long-overdue conversation about the ways in which race impacts access to opportunity and justice\, so must legal aid make more explicit its role in the fight to address the racial dimensions of poverty. \nJoin Yvonne Mariajimenez\, the President and CEO of Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA)\, as she moderates a candid conversation with a panel of experts about the intersection of racial justice and legal aid. \nShe will be joined by Kimberly Merchant\, the Director of the Racial Justice Institute and Network at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law\, as well as Mona Tawatao\, Legal Director of the Equal Justice Society\, and Merf Ehman\, Executive Director of Columbia Legal Aid. \nThis event is being generously sponsored by O’Melveny.  \nRSVP HERE
